Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are an integral component of uPVC frames and must be matched to the frame that is currently in use. The most important factor is the spindle's length which determines if the new uPVC handle will fit.
Use the table below as a quick guide to measure the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will ensure that you purchase the correct replacement window handle for your double glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are typically found on Upvc (but they're also found in timber and aluminum). They feature an oval spindle that extends from the back of the handle, and is inserted into the multi-point lock mechanism attached to the window. By turning the handle, you operate the system that locks and unlocks the locking points around the window.
Espag window handles are available in many different styles and functions. Some feature an option to push a button for a locked closed position and key-locking. (And nonlocking against fire if required.) A lot of them meet the Secure by Design standard to add an additional level of security. They also come with different sizes of spindles, which can be altered by using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of the protruding spindles.
The espagnolette handles we offer have been tested by Yale to ensure that they are up to the standards you'd expect from such a brand and are suitable for timber, upvc and aluminum windows. We have a range of colours available, as well as the option of matching the handle to your existing hinges.
The step height is an additional important aspect of the espagnolette handle. This is the distance between the bottom of the handle and the point at which it rests on the frame. It's crucial to measure this correctly to ensure a tight, secure fit. Most of our handle designs are 43mm between screw hole centres, which is a industry standard.
You can choose between straight or Cranked handles. Cranked handles are perfect for situations where the espagnolette handles will be located close to the frame's edge because they provide more clearance for opening the window.
Our upvc handle replacement range offers a range of finishes, styles, and colours that complement the decor of your home, including polished chrome, satin nickel, and antique brass. Some of our handles have a soft-close feature to reduce the sound of your windows closing.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle that was designed specifically for the designer who wants to offer their customers a fashionable and premium design. These handles are compatible with either uPVC windows or aluminium frames. They work by having spurs that lock over the frame edge to secure the window. This window handle is also lockable so that it will only open when pushed. This adds additional security. The handle is available in five different finishes, both right and left handed versions. This lets fabricators provide more windows.
The cockspur window handle is supplied with three packing pieces of different thicknesses. This allows them to be adjusted to a range of backset sizes. Each packer can be removed from the handle's nose or added to the size of the step to get a different distance between 9mm and 21mm. The handle is available in left and right handed models with straight or curved nose options.
It is important to measure your current handle height before purchasing a new handle to ensure that it will fit properly. The wrong handle could cause a myriad of issues, such as the inability of the window to be closed. This can be a problem for homeowners and create unnecessary stress.
A cockspur is a handle used on older uPVC wood, aluminium and timber windows. These kinds of handles don't have any kind of window lock, in contrast to an Espag handle which is used on more modern windows that will incorporate shootbolts as well as an Espagnolette bar window lock.
The handle that is a espagnolette (often abbreviated as 'espag" or "espag") is the most common handle type that is found on the latest uPVC Casement Windows. When you turn the espagnolette handle it activates an Encloser locking mechanism from Yale which is much more secure than the traditional cockspur or british standard handle. This is because the espagnolette handle turns multiple locks to secure the window frame.
Turn and Tilt Handle
These windows are popular with people who want to improve the airflow in their homes while also adding a level of security. As the name suggests, they come with a turn and tilt function that allows the window to tilt open at 90 degrees, allowing the appearance of a small opening, or drop into a hopper-style design to provide full airflow. Dual functionality provides them with a stylish appearance which can enhance the awe factor of double-glazed windows.
Tilt-and turn windows are more complicated than other double-glazed window styles and can cost more in the process of installation. They require more parts and more labour. However, these windows are well worth the investment as they can add value to your property and provide a host of benefits.
One of the major benefits is that they permit you to clean windows from the inside without using external ladders. This is ideal for those who live high up in buildings or flats, as it eliminates the need to take a risk of falling from a height. Tilt and turn windows also offer added security as windows lock when they are in a tilted position which means that intruders who want to get inside cannot access them from the inside.
These handles are often found on European style windows in Germany and other European countries, but they can also be used in UK homes. The uPVC replacement handle is usually made of a spindle and uses a 7mm square spindle which is typically available in lengths of 32mm, 38mm or 44mm. The base of the handle is usually wider than most handles which is why they are referred to as a tilt safe window handle because it can only be rotated to open the window after it has been locked in either the closed or tilt position.
If you want to replace the uPVC tilt and turn window handle, it is necessary to remove the existing handle from the window with the screwdriver. The screws are typically hidden behind a spring loaded backplate. Simply lift it and twist it to reveal the two screw holes. You can determine the distance between the two screw holes with a ruler or tape measuring device. This will usually be 43mm from centre to center. Once you have the measurement you can then select the appropriate size handle to be a perfect fit for your uPVC windows.

Aluminium Handle
Made from durable diecast aluminium. It is finished in a fashionable matte black colour. Concealed fixings
Typically made from corrosion resistant and weatherproof alloys, the aluminum handle is robust enough to meet the requirements of the construction industry. It is easily shaped through industrial metal processing like extrusion and forging and offers a high level of flexibility and virtually unlimited design possibilities.
Aluminium is also extremely strong, with a great strength-toweight ratio. It can withstand even the most extreme conditions. It is also immune to the UV radiation effects which makes it safe to use indoors. It is also highly versatile and can be colored to suit any style of aesthetic. The possibilities are endless. From traditional emulations to hardware metals to vibrant applications of hundreds or pure colors.
Aluminum isn't rusty and requires no maintenance. This is due to an oxide coating that naturally shields it from damage. The protective layer can further be enhanced through a variety treatments such as anodizing and powder coating to offer an additional layer of protection against corrosion. It can last for many decades without any maintenance or cleaning. Furthermore, it is an eco-friendly material and 100 100% recyclable. This makes it the ideal choice for residential, commercial, and industrial constructions. It is also fire-safe and provides thermal efficiency.
